The few times I have set foot in a nail salon as a child all I can remember was the intense aroma of nail polish. I knew that some kids would sniff their magic markers or glue sticks for a head change so I imagined the Nail Salon had a similar appeal for women. Why else would one choose to spend hours in a place like that if there wasn’t some sort of serious inebriation associated with the visit? My other theory was that it was some type of punishment handed down by the authorities for ladies who behaved irresponsibly. Much like drunk drivers have to attend alcohol classes and cannot use their cars for a period of time, I figured these women had done something that could be described as an indiscriminant use of their hands and had to go the nail shoppe as part of their penance. They could still drive of course but did not regain full use their hands for an hour or so depending on the severity of the crime.
After a recent trip of a Manhattan Beach Nail Salon, I know that all my pre-adolescent assumptions were wrong. Without television and the movies, the inner workings of a nail salon would a complete mystery for most of us men. Even so, not many of us will actually go inside and verify the facts for ourselves. On a whim I accompanied a lady friend to her nail appointment and being under the influence of the polish fumes I agreed to get a simple manicure, but I would not let them touch my feet, I was very adamant about that (It is difficult to escape without shoes). I am pleased to report that the experience was pleasant from beginning to end. I was treated to a hand massage, cuticle treatment, nail clipping and a shiny coat of clear polish. The best part about visiting a Manhattan Beach Nail Salon is that you can go hang out on the beach while your nails dry. It turns out you CAN use your hands after a visit to the nail salon IF you are careful not to rub your freshly painted nails up against anything. Who knew?
